Zero VOC painting to the test

Using zero VOC paints is an integral part of our company's sustainable practices. Along with our daily environmental practices we try to reduce the impact our services have on the environment. When the project manager of Royal & SunAlliance Insurance requested that zero VOC paints must be used, we were ecstatic to help.

The building is an old downtown building. Along with the charm expected of a building of that age, wall repairs and some other logistical challenges were presented.
- In most of the conference rooms the outer window walls had deep cracks, peeling paint and needed some serious repairs.
- The existing woodwork was previously painted in enamel paint that required the use of a super adherent primer, tinted to match the finish colour.
- The coat check area and shelving was mostly laminate and adhession of the new paint would be critical as that is an area with a lot of wear and tear. A super adherent primer along with a tough latex semi-gloss enamel had to be used.
- Painters had to work long hours and during wekends as not to interfere with the normal use of the facility.

The Paint
A product we are very familiar with and had great results with, is Benjamin Moore's EcoSpec.
Because of its very low odour qualities, we used EcoSpec in medical offices and clinics, retail stores, schools and cafeterias.
It dries quickly and allows us to use 2-3 coats in one day and still return the facility back to service within the same day.
We had opportunities to service some of our work in the past and found the paint to be very durable.
Colour selection is great as it can now be tinted to most colours (bases 1,2,3)

The results
The project was completed in three weekends. All the extensive prep-work and priming of the surfaces paid off. Our painters applied a premium coatings system and finishes that will last many years of every day commercial use. And it was all performed with minimal inconvenience to our client.
