Painting for the Design Exchange in Toronto

The Design Exchange in Toronto (234 Bay St.) contracted our painting company for painting their Exhibit Hall. They were hosting the exhibition Japanese Design Today 100 and the condition of the Exhibit Hall needed immediate attention. This very large facility had to be painted and ready in 3 days, as opening day was only a few days away. In fact, storage crates were arriving from Brazil, the second day our painters were painting.

  •   The walls needed a lot of patching and a part of the drywall had to be replaced.
  •   The foyer was to be painted in black, as well as the two display windows.
  •   Mat finish had to be used because of it’s low reflective properties.
  •   The main walls of the Hall would be painted in Benjamin Moore’s CC-50 colour.
  •   The biggest challenge, by far, was painting two parallel orange stripes on the main wall, measuring about 100 feet each. Para Paints' P518-7 was the orange used, as it closely matched the colour of the shows brochures and literature.

After some last minute re-scheduling, a four painter crew was assigned to the project. In addition to the challenging scope of work and the timelines, there were some other issues our painters had to work with.

  • The location of the project was in the heart of the Toronto financial district of King and Bay. Loading and unloading of painting equipment and delivery of paints during rush hour, as well as parking for our painters vehicles and transporting their tools was a challenge.
  • The painting of the orange stripes proved to be more difficult than first thought. A lazer level tool, could not be used, as "level" stripes would not look good to the eye. Adjustments had to be made to make it work with existing architectural detail.
  • The "scenic" mat black finish was fine for the display windows, but a low sheen enamel had to be used for the doors for its resistance to burnishing.

Three days later, after thousands of ladder steps had been climbed, tens of dropcloths moved around and extra long extension poles being used, the project was completed successfully. As our painters were loading the freight elevator, there was talk of job satisfaction, pride of work, even suggestions of visiting the exhibit as guests. At the end of day, our small painting contribution would add to the success of the exhibit. Our clients needs were fulfilled.
